Logline: In 1967, William, the imaginary friend of abused 7-year-old Tim, takes matters into his own hands when he teams the boy up with FBI Agent Mitchell Green. Together the three locate the FBI’s Most Wanted. But a corrupt Agent doesn’t want his target found and must kill Tim to stop him. Mitchell of course saves Tim, but also becomes what William intended all along…Tim’s new dad.
Synopsis: In Arlington, Virginia, 1967, shy and sensitive 7-year-old Tim Webber will never be accepted by his father, Army Captain Frank Webber. By the time Tim was 2 years old, his father hated him. Frank already has a perfect son in Tim’s older brother, 13-year-old Brian. Rough, athletic Brian is everything Tim is not. Abused at home and bullied at school, Tim has lived a tormented, lonely life. His unaffectionate mother, Joan Webber, tries to protect Tim, but mostly just wants to keep the peace. William is Tim’s only friend. He showed up as Tim’s first spoken word and never left. Tim has never seen William. He only hears William’s voice inside his head. And despite severe beatings from his father, William has refused to leave.
When a young girl goes missing, William convinces Tim to report her location to the police. FBI Special Agent Mitchell Green meets with Joan Webber about Tim’s highly accurate tip. Tim, normally fearful of grown men, immediately takes to Mitchell. Through Tim, William provides Mitchell with proof, and offers his services to the FBI, but only if Tim works exclusively with Mitchell. The FBI agrees, and Tim, William and Mitchell are soon locating missing dead bodies all over the country. To relieve Tim’s stress from the violence related to these crimes, Mitchell and Tim include daily workouts, boxing, and swimming in the FBI fitness center. Tim and Mitchell quickly bond as Mitchell works hard to convince Tim that he’s not broken inside. When William begins finding live targets from the from the Top 10 Most Wanted list, Tim quickly draws the attention of corrupt Special Agent Troy Reed. Reed has been sabotaging the FBI’s efforts to find his assigned Top 10 target, so killing Tim becomes his only option.
When his brother Brian deliberately breaks his most prized possession, Tim unleashes his pent-up fury through his boxing training. When Brian comes to dinner with two black eyes, Frank makes fun of him and takes Tim’s side for the very first time. That night, angry and betrayed, Brian attempts to smother Tim with a pillow. But once again Tim surprises Brian with injuries requiring a visit to the emergency room.
Fearing Frank may get violent, Mitchell stakes out Tim’s home, but Troy Reed shows up to destroy the house and everyone in it. Mitchell tries to stop him by telling him Tim is not there, but Troy proceeds and shoots Mitchell. Now suspecting Tim may not have been in the burning house, Troy heads to Mitchell’s parents’ house where Tim really is. Mitchell’s parents send their unmanned cabin cruiser out on the lake as a decoy, and Mitchell’s mother shoots Troy’s dynamite bag blowing him up.
As Mitchell recovers in the hospital, his parents bring Tim in and present Mitchell with adoption papers, making Mitchell Tim’s legal father and them his adopted grandparents.
